A Sonic Protocol of the Mind

A Sonic Protocol of the Mind is a concept I developed in September 2024 in preparation for leading a three-day residency at Wrap in Bergen within the context of Sonic Selskap series–Wrap’s interdisciplinary artistic residencies project.
My role as curator and sherif/ leader of this residency was to create a concept and invite a group of musicians who, guided by the aesthetic and conceptual framework I presented, would engage in free, collective improvisation. Without pre-defined plans or roles, this process led us to explore ideas and sounds together.
A Sonic Protocol of the Mind reflects on the processes of learning, knowing, creating, and being—experiences that many creative individuals navigate. It examines the phases and lessons that guide an artist toward discovering, defining, and redefining their unique creative expression and their place in the world as such.
The physical arrangement of the musicians in the space symbolized the act of claiming their individual place, while simultaneously sharing that space with others. It represented how creative individuality, far from dividing us, can enrich the larger, truer essence of art— something that is always collective and intrinsically influenced by others.

The plan was to position the musicians in a way that would discourage visual communication and emphasise the importance of listening. The ensemble was therefore placed throughout the whole room, using the PA in Studio B in an unconventional configuration with the speakers treated more as amplifiers for individual groups of instruments than as a stereo “stage”.
