Sustained Vibrations.

For the sixth edition of Sonisk Selskap, Dutch sound artist Tijs Ham brings together an eclectic ensemble consisting of musicians that he has met through his work and research in Bergen, particularly during his PhD in Artistic Research at the Grieg Academy and as a member of the board of nyMusikk Bergen. Following two days of sonic experimentation in Wrap’s AV Lab, supervised by a full technical crew led by sound engineer Mathias Grønsdahl, the musicians will be joined by dancers from ImproLaBergen and by visual artist Mariano Pignatiello, for an interdisciplinary improvisation.

Sound and video-over-network technology will link performers in various rooms throughout the entire arts centre, and the audience will experience an immersive audio-visual concert with projections from the dancers and visual artist who react to the music in real time from other rooms. Sustain is a particular theme of interest for the improvised sonic sessions, and Tijs has chosen musicians who’s instruments are (with the exception of drums) capable of long, sustained notes. In his work as a sound designer, Mathias Grønsdahl has developed a style of working with extremely long reverbs. Using a quadrophonic speaker configuration and special reverb techniques (including pitched reverbs) he will provide the basis for what Tijs refers to as an acoustic ecology - an artificially enhanced acoustic environment that will affect the way the musicians play and interact. As an artist who frequently welcomes elements of chaos, and thrives on the unpredictable,
